Japanese NBA player Yuta Watanabe (29) has announced his return to Japan.
Japanese media, including NHK, reported Watanabe's return to Japan on the 20th (Korea Standard Time), citing his Instagram Live.
Watanabe announced his return to Japan in a video posted on Instagram that day, saying, "I have decided to play in Japan from next season."
Watanabe started the NBA Currier in 2018 by signing a two-way contract with the Memphis Grizzlies.
In six seasons, he played in 213 games, averaging 4.2 points, 2.3 rebounds and 0.6 assists.
In the 2022-23 season, he played 58 games for the Brooklyn Nets, posting a career-high 5.6 points and 2.4 rebounds.
The 2023-24 season was traded to the Phoenix Suns for 29 games and later to the Memphis Grizzlies for five games.
After the opening of the season, he played in 12 consecutive games and took the opportunity, but his position has since narrowed.
The trade to Memphis looked like a new opportunity, but failed to do so. He did not come out on March 1 due to "personal reasons" after the game against the Portland Trail Blazers.
He revealed that life in the United States was not easy, saying that "mental problems" were also included in the background of his decision to return to Japan.
He had no regrets. "I decided to continue playing in the U.S. when I was in my 20s, and I have no regrets because I was able to do so," he said, expressing his relaxed mood.
He aims to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics and has set out his own goal: "I want to continue to improve in my 30s."
