Un regard juif sur le monde

Un titre de presse va peut-être s’éteindre et c’est en soi une calamité pour la pensée et la liberté. L’Arche, l’un des plus anciens magazines de la presse juive française, est menacé de disparition et sa notoriété dépasse la simple identité juive et communautaire. Ce mensuel existe depuis 1957, il est diffusé en France, en Israël, dans toutes les sphères du monde juif, mais il est également lu dans des milieux autres que juifs et c’est toute sa richesse et sa force. L’Arche se lit en Europe et outre-Atlantique, en Pologne, aux Etats-Unis, au Canada, en Belgique, en Italie… Il se trouve dans les librairies du quartier latin comme dans les centres culturels étrangers, lu par les non-juifs, les juifs laïques, religieux de tous horizons politiques et socioculturels. Chaque mois, ce magazine exigeant se fait l’écho de la pluralité des opinions qui agitent chacun d’entre nous, français de gauche, de droite, appel JCall, Raison Garder, pratiquants et agnostiques confondus. Chaque mois, il apporte de l’intelligence, de la curiosité, de l’information sur toutes les questions, sur tous les sujets – politiques mais aussi philosophiques, talmudiques, littéraires, culturels, sans oublier évidemment l’humour.

Chaque mois, il porte un regard juif sur un monde en mouvement.

Sa disparition annoncée serait un désastre, qui n’est hélas pas dû qu’à la seule mauvaise conjoncture économique qui frappe la presse papier aujourd’hui. C’est un sabordage politique qui a été décidé unilatéralement par l’institution qui l’a créé et qui en avait la responsabilité, le FSJU.

Le sacrifier aujourd’hui sur l’autel de la technologie ou de la rentabilité relève de l’aveuglement. C’est surtout passer à côté d’un des fondements du judaïsme, sa part symbolique, la dimension particulière de l’écrit et du « Livre » nécessaire aux uns comme aux autres.

A Jewish Window on the World

L’Arche, one of the longest-standing French Jewish periodicals, risks ceasing publication for good. The disappearance of a journal is always a sad moment in the life of a culture. The reputation of L’Arche goes far beyond the French Jewish community. This monthly, which started publication in 1957, is widely read in France, Israel and all parts of the Jewish world, as well as by numerous non-Jews. Its unique impact lies in this broad appeal. L’Arche is read in Europe, in North and South America. One can find it in Paris bookstores, as well as in cultural centers the world over. It is read by non-Jews, secular Jews, religious Jews, and people of all political leanings.

Each month, this demanding journal echoes the diversity of opinions, progressives, conservatives, religious or agnostics alike. Each month, L’Arche foments intellectual curiosity through its articles on politics, philosophy, Jewish law, literature, culture, and humor. Each month, L’Arche provides its readers with Jewish views on a changing world. Sadly, the reason for ending publication cannot be found simply in the economic downturn affecting the printed press in general.

Rather, it is the result of a political decision made without consultation with those who write for it by the institution that founded it and publishes it: the Fonds Social Juif Unifié, the French equivalent of the United Jewish Appeal. To sacrifice L’Arche on the altar of the new technologies and profitability would bear witness to short sightedness and to a blind submission to the rules of the short-term marketplace. More importantly, this decision demonstrates indifference to the guiding principles of Judaism and to the central and symbolic place of writing and thinking vital to all of us.
